This is a story about creating a demo board for working with shift registers.
- first create the circuit board
- demo on Arduino platform as a single, 8 bit shift register
- expand demo board to use multiple SR, iterative with software development
- when hardware is operational port the software to STM8 platform and Cypress board
Notes about creating the circuit board for the shift reg (demo)
- the 7 segment(7S) displays are common -cathode
- the common connections are to pins 3 & 8
- pins 3 & 8 are opposite each other which makes construction on strip board (aka Veroboard) easy
- pin 1 of the 7 segment displays is bottom left as viewed from above (LED visible side)
- the current limit resistors are in DIL packs
- 20 pin DIL sockets available for the resistors and shiftRegister ICs
- Four (7S) displays were needed and had to be hosted in sockets -one large socket was used sideways
- the outputs of the shiftReg IC 74HC595 are mostly on the LHS and in sequence
